A city with tradition and a modern outlook
Białystok — the capital of Podlasie, a city with a rich history and rapidly developing municipal infrastructure. Here, tradition meets modernity — from Branicki Palace to new residential estates and industrial zones. The Białystok region has long invested in expanding and upgrading water and sewer networks, prioritizing solutions that are environmentally friendly and beneficial for residents. One such project was the construction of a sanitary sewer in Lewickie, located just south of the city limits. It is a quiet area but of considerable infrastructural importance — networks serving new residential development zones and planned industrial investments converge there.
Precision where others must dig
The MIDO crew carried out a project in Lewickie to install a 25‑metre sanitary sewer using PP225 pipe in a trenchless operation — between manholes with diameters of 1200 and 1000 mm. Although the section was short, its execution required millimetre‑level accuracy because it ran adjacent to existing utilities and in an area with elevated groundwater. Where traditional methods would require opening the road, removing the pavement and days of work, MIDO completed the bore without disturbing the asphalt. The works were performed using Terma's proprietary technology — a gravity drilling rig that enables precise installation of pipes between existing manholes without the need for launch pits or extensive excavations.
Why this matters
Białystok is a rapidly developing city but, like any larger urban area, faces traffic challenges. Excavating even a local road causes congestion, detours, noise and temporary inconvenience for residents. For these reasons, trenchless technologies are becoming the standard in modern municipal works.
MIDO technology addresses the needs of contemporary cities:
- no excavations or pavement damage,
- short completion time,
- full precision thanks to the gravity‑guided control system,
- capability to work in difficult ground conditions and at high groundwater levels.
With such solutions, upgrading sewer networks does not have to cause major disruption to traffic. The approach delivers minimal public‑space intrusion, rapid implementation and reduced environmental impact.
MIDO — the future without excavation
The Lewickie project is further evidence that modern technology can be effective, quiet and considerate of the surroundings. Where conventional methods would take weeks, this work was completed in one day. Where others excavate, the operation was carried out precisely — from manhole to manhole. MIDO views the future of infrastructure as encompassing not only new pipes and manholes but also a new approach to environmental protection and resident comfort.
