Innovative trenchless execution at Gdynia SKM Stocznia – effectiveness and experience in challenging conditions

Use of trenchless technology in difficult conditions – key to success
At the SKM Stocznia station site in Gdynia, we completed an advanced construction of a section of stormwater sewer to drain the trackbed. The task, which initially appeared routine, proved to be full of challenges that only gravity boring technology and experienced operators could address. In this case, traditional construction methods such as open excavations would not only have delayed the works but might also have required closing the trackbed for several weeks, which was unacceptable.

With Mido, the task was completed in record time – just one day, without the need to close the trackbed or disrupt train operations. Projects of this type show that not only the technology itself but also the experience of the operator team are critical; in our case that combination allowed us to overcome all encountered difficulties.

Gravity boring technology — well-suited to these conditions

During the works in Gdynia we encountered an unexpected obstacle in the form of an unidentified concrete wall, a remnant of an old structure, located exactly where the bore was planned. Such unforeseen circumstances could have caused significant delays and required open excavation methods that would have involved prolonged closure of the trackbed. Thanks to trenchless technology using a gravity boring rig, we carried out the necessary works without any intervention to the track surface.

What distinguished our approach in this case?

  • No intervention in the track surface – no need to excavate the trackbed, which allowed train operations to continue.

  • Speed of execution – the bore took only one day; compared with traditional construction methods (which could have taken several weeks) this represented substantial time savings and reduced financial outlay.

  • Minimized disruption – no need to close the trackbed, so trains could continue to run, which is essential for such infrastructure works.

Gravity boring — advanced technology for executing challenging projects

Gravity boring is a method that enables precise work in difficult conditions, such as buried walls, old foundations or other unexpected obstacles—this project is an example. It is a technology that offers considerable capabilities even in locations where open excavations would be not only time-consuming but also pose a risk to existing infrastructure.

For the stormwater sewer section in Gdynia, a PP315 pipe was installed in a manner that minimized the risk of damage to the track and ensured long-term functionality of the drainage system. A key element of the process was the use of modern equipment and the experience of the operator team, who demonstrated precision and flexibility in adapting to site conditions.

Summary – Mido is a leader in trenchless technologies.

The stormwater sewer project at SKM Stocznia in Gdynia is a practical example of how a gravity boring rig changes the execution of infrastructure projects. Thanks to trenchless drilling technology, operator experience and rapid execution, we were able to perform the works without intervention to the trackbed, ensuring continuity of train operations and significant time savings.

The project involved installing 17 meters of stormwater sewer using PP315 pipes, which required 28 modules. The entire task was completed in just one day — demonstrating how efficiently a complex trenchless operation can be carried out under these conditions.
